St James’s Catholic Primary School ‘Put out into the deep’

Carousel

 

At St James’s children in years 1, 2 and 3 spend an afternoon a week involved in a carousel of activities all linked to the curriculum. This provides children with an opportunity to work in small groups to develop a range of skills, consolidate their learning and to have new experiences learning in the outdoor environment.

Children take part in 3 lessons on a Carousel afternoon and will complete a unit of lessons each half term before then moving on to 3 new areas of learning.

 

Year 1 Carousel

  • Nature club- Linked to the Science curriculum, children explore habitats around them and investigate living things. Within these lessons children will have the opportunity to design and make their own mini beast hotels as well as growing and using their own vegetables.

  • Maths- Children consolidate their knowledge and understanding of a variety of maths skills and have the opportunity to apply their skills in mathematical games.

  • Fine Motor- Following on from the Foundation Stage children continue to develop their fine motor skills to support their handwriting. They will have the opportunity to practise the formation of different letters and shapes as well as being involved in fine and gross motor challenges.

  • French- Linked to the MFL curriculum children work with St James’s specialist MFL teacher to develop basic French language.

  • Mind games- Children are given the opportunity to work in teams and as individuals to play a variety of games and to solve challenges.

  • Library- Working with St James’s Librarian, children develop their library skills whilst being exposed to a range of literature.

 

Year 2 Carousel

  • Maths- Children consolidate their knowledge and understanding of a variety of maths skills and have the opportunity to apply their skills in mathematical games.

  • Library- Working with St James’s Librarian, children develop their library skills whilst being exposed to a range of literature.

  • French- Linked to the MFL curriculum children work with St James’s specialist MFL teacher to continue to develop French language.

  • Computing- Linked to the ICT curriculum children develop an understanding of algorithms and use these to program bee bots.

  • Mandarin- Children are introduced to a new language where they develop basic Mandarin language.

  • Sewing- Children are introduced to new skills where they complete simple sewing projects whilst continuing to develop their fine motor control.

     

Year 3 Carousel

  • French- Linked to the MFL curriculum children continue to work with St James’s specialist MFL teacher to develop and extend their knowledge of the `French language.

  • Mind games- Children are introduced to a new range of games and activities to challenge them.

  • Computing- Linked to the ICT curriculum children develop their understanding of algorithms further and use these to program bee bots.

  • Knitting- Children are introduced to a new skill linked to the Design and Technology Curriculum where children use knitting skills to complete a project.

  • Sewing- Children continue to use their sewing skills to complete a new project.
