The Role of Our School Council
The school council was set up in 2004-2005 during the summer elections which took place at the school. Candidates from years 1, 2,3,4 and 5 had to deliver a speech to their class and give reasons as to why they should be the best candidate to represent their class at the Pupil Council. Children were required to receive nominations from supporters and then to allow their class to vote for a boy and girl representative. This system of elections is carried out each year. The council serves as a democratically elected body in the school which seeks to allow children to have a say in the school.
The council meets at least every three weeks and is led by the chair and the Vice chair. Mrs Bantin or Mrs Green attend the meetings and oversee the council. A budget has been allocated to the council to spend and so the children decide how this money is to be used. Minutes are recorded and the council has an official committee. The children take their roles very seriously.
The council had already played an important role in the achievement of the schools healthy schools status, the vegetable patch( gardening club) and the inclusion of plenty of playground equipment for the children to use at playtime. It was instrumental in the George Tancreds Award from the Woolworths Playground Project which allowed them to buy equipment for the centre within St James's school.
